BBBS : Annual Cross Country

I was not a very active person in school. Sports did not interest me. I usually spent the annual Sports Day chit chatting with friends sitting on the stands. However, I made myself run the school cross-country run every year without fail. It was held on a Saturday morning. Boys who completed the course within a certain time earned 1 point for their sports house. (The photos in this article are scanned from my old year books.) The course started at Padang Astaka (a.k.a Expo Field) which was located behind the school. No matter which Saturday it was held on, … Continue reading BBBS : Annual Cross Country

BBBS: Friends Who Signed My 1984 Year Book

Here is a collection of signatures from  my classmates and teachers who signed my 1984 year book. Two of my favourite teachers, Miss Mah and Mrs Wee (who was my class teacher) also signed it. They taught one of my favourite subjects: Modern Maths and Add Maths. How innocent the messages were. Gerard’s signature even had a heart. Bernard’s message reflected a popular song by Frankie Goes To Hollywood. Some simply signed their names without a message. Some signed their names with a red pen to make their mark stand out. Some messages are by classmates who have passed on, … Continue reading BBBS: Friends Who Signed My 1984 Year Book

BBBS: I Chose To Attend BBBS Because of A Special Teacher

I attended the Pasar Road English School II (SRK Jalan Pasar II) for my primary school education. After my Standard 6, the government assigned me to SMK Aminuddin Baki, near Pudu, together with all my classmates. But by then, my family had bought a house closer to PJ and moved out of Cheras. So, my family asked for me to be transferred to another school near my new home. However, school transfers took time and were not always successful. My mother had an uncle who was a Tan Sri and he offered to help. He boasted that he could get … Continue reading BBBS: I Chose To Attend BBBS Because of A Special Teacher

Dear Paprika: So You Think You Have Written A Best Seller, Huh?

Dear Paprika, I just talked to Aunty Hui Min who asked if she should publish her book of poetry. I told her to look for a publisher and not publish it herself. Writing a book is not easy. Some writers take years crafting their stories, creating interesting characters and dreaming up twists and plots for their readers. Once it is finished, they would probably announce it on Facebook or Twitter, “Done! Finally completed writing my book!” And they will received lots of encouragement from their friends, “Great! Would love to buy a copy! I’m sure it will be a best … Continue reading Dear Paprika: So You Think You Have Written A Best Seller, Huh?

BBBS: Best Band in PJ!

In 1985, my classmates did all of us proud. Their band was champion in the “Best of PJ” band competition! Eddie (Ai Kwang) and Rene recounted the story to me. It all started at the BB Talent Time. Every year or two, Bbians would be given a chance to show off their talents in acting or music. That year, after the 1985 Talent Time, an announcement was made that the Interact Club was organising a band competition called Best of PJ. James and Wai Keong set about forming a band for the competition. James played the guitar, an instrument he … Continue reading BBBS: Best Band in PJ!

BBBS: New Hairstyles in the 80s

It was the 80s and New Wave pop stars were kings on Top Of The Pops. Along with this new kind of music, new fashion styles were introduced to millions of teenagers. This included hairstyles. To get our hair styled properly, we stopped going to the Indian barber and went to unisex hair salons like Peter & Guys, Thomas & Guys and Headmasters. Here, we were introduced to a new experience. The hairstylist would wash our hair before cutting it. And when he cut it, he actually measured the hair to be cut with his fingers. The Indian barber did … Continue reading BBBS: New Hairstyles in the 80s

BBBS: The Prefects Election – More Stories

After I posted the story about the rebellion during the 1984 Prefects Elections, Harnam told me more of the story from his point of view. He was a prefect since lower secondary, if I remember correctly. He said, “I remember the incident well. It really boiled down to Mahendran’s brother’s quest to be elected as a prefect. He pretty much ran an election campaign to get in but didn’t. “Mahendran and his brother then cried shenanigans and then whipped you guys [fellow classmates] into a frenzy with unfounded accusations of corruption etc. in the prefect’s board. “Frankly, his brother just … Continue reading BBBS: The Prefects Election – More Stories

BBBS: Our Carrot Cut School Pants

In a previous article, I recounted the “carrot cut” pants we used to tailor make. Some of the well-to-do boys like Warner had his school pants tailor made too. They were all carrot cut, of course. The other boys also wanted the same style pants but did not have the money to do so. So, we got creative. I have already recounted the story about how we boys could sew. Now, we would bring our sewing skill to the next level! We experimented with altering the design of our school pants. The store bought school pants were old fashioned. The … Continue reading BBBS: Our Carrot Cut School Pants
